The annual CSUStanislaus-ERFA Scholarship Fund Drive has begun.  Our goal is $4,800 to assist graduate students aspiring to teach at the college level.  Contributions are tax deductible.  Please help achieve our annual goal—100 percent participation is the objective—so even a small donation will count.  If we exceed our goal, all funds will be used for scholarships.  Checks should be made to “CSU Stanislaus ERFA” and brought to our next gathering (or sent c/o Ed Aubert, ERFA Treasurer, 961 Potomac Avenue, Turlock CA 95382-0479).   The current awardees are most grateful and sent us happy letters of appreciation.  Thanks!! for your continued support and participation.

About our CSUStanislaus-ERFA Scholarships:
As enrollment fees have increased, there has been a trend for those seeking to prepare for college teaching to proceed part-time when employment income is essential or desirable.  There have been fewer qualified ERFA Scholarship applicants who enroll full-time than in the past.  The University requests only awarding academically qualified graduate students ERFA Scholarships, giving first priority to those enrolled full-time, but allowing secondary priority to part-time students.  We are advised not to give partial awards, nor single semester awards.  Therefore, our plan for now is to proceed as follows:
1) Allow release of the annual award now to a part-time student for 2017-18;  and
2) Offer two larger awards in the future, rather than attempt to expand to the three we offered this year; and
3) Continue as we have in the past, allowing part-time students to qualify for awards whenever there is the absence of qualified full-time students.

Subject: Some ERFA Council Sharing

Dieter and I participated in the ERFA Council session at CSU Long Beach on October 21.   Dieter will give the report to our campus membership at the next gathering.
Since this meeting was unusually productive and included a few significant and timely actions, I write to briefly summarize what may be of immediate interest to you.
A resolution was passed unanimously to delay implementation for at least one year, the revised version of CSU EO 1110, concerning changes in General Education and English/math deficiency remediation---a big controversy and claim of insufficient faculty consultation.   It also could be an action to gain positive prompt CSU budget support while somewhat aiding students.
The Council voted with one nay to soon conduct a mail statewide vote of ERFA membership to open Statewide ERFA membership to all CSU Cal PERS retirees.  This clearly impacts campus ERFA affiliates but does not obligate them to any change.
By a somewhat mixed vote the Council approved an ERFA By-Law change to reconstitute, and increase by one, membership of the ERFA Executive Committee.   To my surprise, the immediate impact was that I, as Statewide Membership Committee Chairperson, was added to the ERFA Executive Committee (which meets 4 times annually).
All retirees who enjoy (or tolerate) health club physical workouts will be pleased to learn that PERS, after retiree lobbying, added the Silver Sneakers benefit to our health insurance coverage effective 1/1/2018.
A  new edition of the ERFA Reporter will be online within a week.   The new revised 2017 edition of the ERFA Survivors’ Guide is available to new ERFA members gratis, to current members for $5, and to others for $10 from the ERFA Northridge Office.
the next ERFA Council will be held in April 2018 at CSU East Bay (Hayward).
Let me know if any clarification is desired.         Cheers,     Ed
